S Y N O P S I S

15살때부터 첫 남편이 이유도 없이 죽은 후로 재가를 해도 
매년 갖가지 어이없는 이유로 남편을 먼저 보내는 평안도에 사는 옹녀. 
사람들은 계속되는 남편의 죽음에 대한 원인이 그녀가 과부팔자를 타고 났으며, 
과한 미색과 강한 음기 때문이라고 비난한다. 

결국 마을에서 쫓겨나 새로운 삶을 위해 길을 나선 옹녀는 
전라도 지역에서 난봉질로 유명한 변강쇠를 만나 다시금 새로운 삶을 꿈꾸며 성실하게 살림을 꾸려나간다. 

그러나 변강쇠는 노름과 폭력, 술에 빠져 살기 일쑤고, 
한겨울 나무를 하러 산으로 나갔다가 마을 앞에 서 있는 장승을 베어와 땔감으로 때기까지 한다. 
변강쇠의 만행에 팔도에 있는 장승들이 노하여 머리끝부터 발끝까지 갖가지 병을 몸에 발라 고통스럽게 몇 날 며칠을 앓다가 죽게 하는데 
그 와중에도 변강쇠는 옹녀에게 수절을 요구하고, 다른 남자와 인연을 맺었다가는 급살을 날릴 것이라는 저주를 퍼붓는다.

변강쇠의 죽음 후, 옹녀의 곡소리를 듣고 위로해주려는 듯 중이 찾아온다. 
자신이 험상궂게 죽어있는 송장을 처리해 줄테니 그 후에 자신과 함께 살자고 제안하지만, 
기이한 기운을 내뿜으며 흉측한 모습으로 죽어 있는 시체를 보고 놀라 죽고만다. 

허탈해할 새도 없이 옹녀의 집에 험악하게 죽은 송장을 치워주면 옹녀와 함께 살 수 있다는 
소문을 듣고 초라니가 방정맞게 장고를 치며 찾아온다. 
초라니가 송장을 위해 장고를 치며 고사를 시작하지만 역시나 이내 숨이 가빠지며 몸이 비틀려 죽는다.

연이은 남자들의 죽음과 그간의 인생을 견디지 못하고 슬픔에 잠겨 죽기로 결심하는 옹녀. 
죽음 앞에서 지난날 자신이 가졌던 인생의 희망들과 꿈을 떠올리며 옹녀는 다시 새로운 결심을 한다.

In the end, she was kicked out of the village in Pyeong-an-do and hit the road for new life. In Jeolla-do area, she met a famous lovelace Byen-gang-soe and soon married dreaming of life with happiness and a sincerity.

However, her new husband was lousy man living with gambling, violence, and alcohol. Ong-nyeo became no longer able to endure his Irresponsibility and let him go out to the mountains for firewood. But he was too lazy to climb mountain and cut down the sacred totem protecting the village. The sacred spirits raged and as the result he got his comeuppance suffering for days with plague and diseases. Dying, he demanded Ong-nyeo to live the rest of her life as a widow, remaining faithful to her deceased husband and cursed her death if she meet another man after his death.
After the death of Byen-gang-soe, a monk and a rash man were seduced her beautiful appearance then proposes to live with them in return of dealing with the corpse, but they died instantly surprised with hideous dead Byen-gang-soe.
Ong-nyeo was pessimistic to make new mate in her life and decides to end her pathetic life losing spouses. At the front of death, she recollects the hopes and dreams of her life that she had in the past, and she makes a new decision again.
